Crime Rate Holds Steady at Record Low

Eventually, I will get around to doing some social and cultural trends posts. The AP published a story on Crime Rates which continue at a thirty-year low.

Crime Rate Holds Steady at Record Low

Here is the lead:

"The nation's crime rate was unchanged last year, holding at the lowest levels since the government began surveying crime victims in 1973, the Justice Department (search) reported Sunday.

Since 1993, violent crime, as measured by victim surveys, has fallen by 57 percent and property crime by 50 percent. That has included a 9 percent drop in violent crime from 2001-2002 to 2003-2004."

It is curious how so many believe that crime is running rampant when in fact it is at record lows.

  1. I also saw this.
I don’t know if it is a media emphasis or what. The perception is not the reality in this case.

  2. My analysis of a number of social indicators would put 1981 as the high water mark for dysfuntional culture. Most indicators show major improvements over the last thirty years. Like you, I suspect media has a role in the perception but I think there is also a swing back and forth between over concern and under concern about social problems.

I used to know David Stanley at Lenexa Baptist Church. I just wanted to say hi to him and his wife and see how everything was going..
