Country experiencing moral decline? Sociologist, theologian both see significant drop is an interesting article linked at Presbyweb today. Here are the final paragraphs:
He's [David F. Wells] skeptical about evangelical success the past half-century, saying much of it was fueled by a similar escape from truth. He's especially critical of churches and megachurches that design everything to be sensitive to spiritual “seekers.”
These new-style evangelical congregations don't deny biblical truth or question the importance of doctrinal orthodoxy, he says. But in practice, orthodox truth is not “seen to be central” and sermons convey self-help nostrums.
In sum, evangelicals are erasing “the line between faith and retailing, business and belief,” Wells says. He predicts that supposedly orthodox evangelical churches are laying ground for the decline that more liberal “mainline” Protestants have experienced in North America and Europe.
