At some point, I plan to do a lengthy series of posts about women and ministry. I have read a couple dozen books and several articles related to this topic. I find it one of the most rewarding topics to consider because it forces you to confront such a wide range of issues concerning the interpretation and application of scripture in daily life.
In the meantime, I came across an excellent series Scot Mcknight is doing called Women in the World of Jesus. He is giving an overview of scholarly research about the lives of women in Jesus's culture. I highly recommend it!
