Tony Campolo used to preach that God expects us to contribute 10% of our yearly income to throw a party with God. The real question is, what will you do with the other 90% of God's money?
I hear a lot about preaching stewardship in our churches which usually translates into a plan for getting people's money out of their pockets and into the offering plate. Far more important, I think is for people to learn early on how to save and stay out of debt. Consumer debt seriously limits people's ability to change and adapt to whatever God asks of them.
The Christian Science Monitor published Young dream-seekers strapped by debt which tells the plight of many young adults today. I would encourage every pastor and elder to consider addressing this with their congregations. Not condemnation, but help people grasp total stewardship and how to do it.
