The State of Emergent 2006 is an article written by Emergent-US coordinator, Tony Jones, in Next-Wave Magazine. He is reflecting on what happened in the Emergent conversation last year and writing about what he expects in the near future. One observation that should be of interest to many of you faithful readers:

A couple of more notable trends in 2005 are: 1) We witnessed a significant uptick in interest and involvement from traditionally “mainline” Christians, especially those in Methodist and Presbyterian circles.  And 2) We have begun to clarify the difference between “Emergent” and the “emerging church.”

What do you think? Emergyterians and Emergodists? (I thought about Methergent, but that sounded like it could be a bunch of druggies.)

    Well, considering several Methodists and Presbyterians attend JT, I think this could be very true. On Sundays I attend a Methodist church with my formerly Presbyterian husband; I was raised by a Baptist and an atheist and my closest friend is a Messianic Jew. I’m thinking my kids are most likely just going to be called mutts – or perhaps, instead of trying to further codify the label, we could all just be Christians, followers of Christ with no need to get into smaller boxes?

    So maybe your kids will be Methpresbybaptesitmessindependent. Hmmm…Simply “Christian” is sounding better all the time.

    Don’t leave out the Emurtherans, Emergopalians, Emerptists, Emerthren, or Emerntecostals. I don’t suppose there are many Emertholics. When will telemergolists start asking for money on TV?

    Hey Ish. I just checked out your site.
    “Just trying not to get run over at the intersection of faith and culture.”
    I am in stitches. My wife got me the entire Pink Panther collection on DVD last year for my birthday. If you knew how much she hates the Pink Panther you would know just how much she loves me.
    Anyway, back to blogging, because as we all know, “There is a time to be serious and a time not to be serious. And this is not one of them.”
