I have lived in or around Kansas City most of my life. My family moved to the area in 1968, four months after King's assassination. I find that few people, even long-time residents, are aware of the extent of the unrest King's murder generated, assuming they know anything. I have talked with Black leaders and a few other "old timers" who have insisted that other than some initial reports, the magnitude of the riots was swept under the rug. I found Kansas City riots, April 1968, interesting in that regard. The heart of the unrest occurred where Austin's mural is painted, highlighted in my previous post.
