“Leader’s Insight: No Cowardly Flip-Flop” Brian McLaren

Leader's Insight: No Cowardly Flip-Flop is an article in Leadership Journal by Brian McLaren on how to be pastoral in answering questions about homosexuality. I suspect there is something in this article that will push buttons from all sides of this issue.  *grin*

I hesitate in answering "the homosexual question" not because I'm a cowardly flip-flopper who wants to tickle ears, but because I am a pastor, and pastors have learned from Jesus that there is more to answering a question than being right or even honest: we must also be … pastoral. That means understanding the question beneath the question, the need or fear or hope or assumption that motivates the question.

  1. I think he has a point there — we often speak openly and strongly — aggressively – when the people in our midst are hurting deeply.

  2. I agree. The is almost always a question behind any question that is asked. Sometimes a direct discussion of the truth is needed. Other times folks just want to know if it is safe to talk about something that is vexing them. How hard it is (for me anyway) to be patient and discern what is really being asked.
