The liberal baby bust is an opinion piece in USA Today about the difference in fertility rates for liberals and conservatives. It would appear that liberals are a dying breed … literally.

… It's that progressives are so much less likely to have children.

It's a pattern found throughout the world, and it augers a far more conservative future — one in which patriarchy and other traditional values make a comeback, if only by default. Childlessness and small families are increasingly the norm today among progressive secularists. As a consequence, an increasing share of all children born into the world are descended from a share of the population whose conservative values have led them to raise large families.

Today, fertility correlates strongly with a wide range of political, cultural and religious attitudes. In the USA, for example, 47% of people who attend church weekly say their ideal family size is three or more children. By contrast, 27% of those who seldom attend church want that many kids.

  1. Yeah, we progressives aren’t having kids. But I don’t know if that really leads to a trend. At least with my wife and I our parents are conservatives. Political leaning isn’t something that necessarily gets passed down from generation to generation… or at least you can grow out of your parent’s political leanings.

  2. I think there are hints of truth in the article but I agree with your assessment that parents aren’t the only determining factor. Furhtermore, looking at the nation I would probably be pegged to the right of center but my wife and I ended up with zero kids. So go figure.
I raise it more as an interesting demographic phenom than anything else. One of the things I have always found fascinating is the unintended consequences of ideas and actions.
