“Dreams for My School” Ryan Bolger

Ryan Bolger at Fuller Theological Seminary is reflecting on what seminary might look like in the future. This is the first of four dreams in Dreams for My School. I particularly like the following.

A seminary training model is built around the idea that a single person or a set of staff workers has most of the gifts in a particular church community and then we train that one person or group of persons. But, what do we do when the gifts are spread throughout the community as they are in many new forms of church? How do we continue to train the many, rather than the few?

I dream that my seminary will move away from the professional training model and will equip entire communities for mission.

  1. The current seminary model is BROKEN! It has been for a LONG time. I am a Fuller grad. I loved it there. I received a good academic education there but it did little to prepare me for serving as a church pastor.
Vancouver School of Theology has a great model for training pastors. Unfortunately, a person has to be from overseas or serving an “ethnic” congregation to get into the program. It takes about 6 years to get an M. Div. The student is REQUIRED to be in full time ministry at a church during their entire education in their native culture. Everything that is learned is learned in ministry context.
Fuller shoud give this method a look see…
