PC(USA) treasury official charged with embezzlement

PC(USA) treasury official charged with embezzlement is a news release from the Presbyterian News Service. Judy Golliher has been fired after embezzling more than $100,000 in recent months. I can't express how stunning this is! As a GAC member working with Mission Support Services, I have worked with Judy over the past two years, and it is very hard to believe.

The bad news is that the embezzlement happened. The good news is that it appears that it was uncovered within a few months of the first instance with no harm to GAC programs. I hope this may shake some of our governing bodies and congregations out of complacency about their fiduciary responsibility for funds entrusted to them.

I don't know what led Judy to do this, and she has no history of problems like this based on background checks. Please keep her, her family, and her colleagues in your prayers as they sort this out. I know people have to be in a state of shock.

  1. I saw this first on your blog. Over $100K? Good grief, that’s astonishing and sure to prompt a whole lotta questions all around.

  2. I don’t know the nature the embezzlement but it appears to have been accomplished in part through phony journal entries and bogus charges. I also don’t know how it was uncovered and it does not appear that anyone else was involved. You can’t keep people from embezzling but you can put obstacles in their way and implement checks and balances that turn up false reporting. Someone in the position of treasurer has considerable access to the records and can bury the false transactions quite deep. That this was caught within about six or seven months of the first false entry suggests to me that the system worked but we will see what further investigation turns up.
