Scott Gilbreath has a great post about marriage public policy in England called UK Education Minister attacks marriage. One of the comments the minister makes is.
"Our focus should not be on whether people marry or not, it should be on the welfare of the child, and the quality of the upbringing."
This is a particularly ominous statement. Our Anglo-American legal system has been built on the foundation that the family is an enviable institution independent of the state and certainly not a creation of the state. Families do not exist to serve the state. The state is an institution with a limited role that facilitates a safe environment for families to flourish as they raise their children.
This is not a slam on single people or people in other circumstances. It is merely a recognition that the family has a special role in society, not the least of which is the birthing and socializing of children. That role is not to be usurped by the state. This minister sees children as the state's responsibility and adults, in whatever configuration of relationships they choose, as secondary caretakers.
What next? Human rights for Apes? Oh wait. Spain is already considering that.
