The Royals’ Race to the Bottom

Last year the Kansas City Royals finished the season with a franchise record of 105 losses. It is now September 9, and the 2006 regular season for Major League Baseball is in its final weeks. With twenty games left, they must play worse than 5-15 to set a new record. It is still clearly within their grasp.

The real excitement is about who will claim the title for worst major league team. For all but a few days of the season, the Kansas City Royals have held exclusive rights to the title, but three contenders are coming on strong. As of this morning, here are the contenders with their records, loss percentage, and number of games out of last place.

Kansas City Royals         53-89  .627   –
Tampa Bay Devil Rays  56-85  .603  3.5
Chicago Cubs                    56-85  .603  3.5
Pittsburgh Pirates          57-85  .599  4.0
