“Please Don’t Stereotype The Emerging Church” Dan Kimball

From Vintage Faith (Dan Kimball): Please Don't Stereotype The Emerging Church

I rarely, rarely ever try to specifically talk about someone in a negative light, and I hope this isn't negative against a person, but about their opinions. But in this situation, because there was a public letter mailed out to probably thousands of people, I find myself wanting to respond.

I received from a friend a mass letter going out to supporters of national radio preaching ministry. He sent it to me to read since the whole letter was about "the emerging church". Before I share my thoughts on it, I want to share that in my early Christian years as I was looking for answers, I found this pastor's commentaries helpful and I still do. I also went to one of his conferences in my early ministry years. I'm not writing his name out here, but if you got the letter, then it is you I am hoping to speak to here as you will know who I am talking about (and probably isn't too hard to figure out even if you didn't read the letter). Anyway….

The letter he refers to is by John McArthur (although Kimball doesn't identify him.) The post is lengthy, but I think Kimball does a wonderful job responding to the situation.

Thanks for linking us to this, Michael. I have virtually no first-hand contact with emerging churches and so my views of the movement are being developed second-hand through positive and negative comments from people inside and out. This sort of insider’s response to criticism is very helpful to me.

  2. Well, if you hang out around my site long enough you will find I am both a big fan and big critic of the Emerging Church. 🙂 It is diverse enough for just about everybody to find something the like and dislike. I still think the book by Gibbs and Bolger “Emerging Churches” is one of the most helpful for getting a handle on things.

  3. This is vintage MacArthur. Nearly all of his books that I have read are of this ilk. However, he names names and cites references in the works of the accused. I’m not totally comfortable with his approach, but that is really between him and God. It is a shame that he didn’t name names and have this article researched. He carries a lot of clout.

  4. I don’t think I have ever read one of his books but I have read some of his articles and heard his broadcasts. He strikes me as being one of the those Evangelical “popes” that scores give undue authority to. Not a world I hang around in much. I know little of the specifics of his teaching but what I have heard doesn’t make me want to know more. 🙂
