Beckham is Coming!

Sports IllustratedComing to America

Beckham will play for MLS' L.A. Galaxy in $250M deal.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bend this, TomKat and Brangelina: Becks 'n' Posh are coming to Hollywood.

And David Beckham didn't even have to audition to become the next American Idol.

The most recognized soccer player on the planet — fashion icon, tabloid fixture, marketing giant — announced a deal Thursday to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"David Beckham is a global sports icon who will transcend the sport of soccer in America," gushed Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber.

Bringing free kicks, glitz and his Spice Girl wife, Beckham is leading another British invasion, hoping to do for American soccer what the Beatles once did for pop music — make it rock. …

I hear my Kansas City Wizards passed on the deal. They are holding out for a more subdued soccer icon like Zidane.

  1. This is good news, especially since most of the money is endorsement deals. Beckham honestly wants to live in LA, so the Galaxy are a great team for him.

  2. I don’t suppose many tears are being shed this side of the Atlantic at the Beckhams going to the US. He was a great player and is certainly a hard worker, but the surrounding furore about his private life distracts from what he brings to the game.

  3. From what I read, Beckam should fit right in in Hollywood.
“….his private life distracts from what he brings to the game.”
I know some about this. Regrettably, I think he will fit right in with many American athlete superstars.
Soccer is still a very minor side show in the US. Pele brought some attention to the sport in the late 1970s when he came to NY. As a former player and big fan, I hope that Beckham will at least be able to draw some attention to the sport (some of it hopefully good 🙂 ) and maybe take it to a higher level.
