History of Religion Map

You may recall that I posted a map from Map of War about the Imperial History of the Middle East last October. Brad Wright (via Russell Smith) has found another great map by these folks about the History of Religion. Check it out.

  1. Hmm,
Not sure I like how they treat the Orthodox in terms of History. The idea that Christianity only came to Russian/the step in the 18th century does not match what I think I know …
But an interesting map none the less.

  2. Yeah, it would be nice to have documentation about the data that goes into some of these maps.

  3. As I understand it, Hinduism had its roots in a monotheism introduced by the Indo-Aryans. This would not have predated significantly the time Abraham. I personally like the idea that the Indo-Aryans were perhaps descendants of Abraham through his third wife Keturah.
I also think that if the Byzantine church had treated better the Assyrian Christians that Mohammed came into contact with that Islam may not have come into being…

  4. Interesting observations dlw. It is fun to speculate on alternative historical trajectories.
As to the accuracy of the map, what was it the guy on SNL used to say.
“It may not be mahvelous, but it looks mahvelous!”
