Tragedy in Kansas City

The church softball team went out for some practice today on a gorgeous sunny afternoon with temps in the mid-80s. Just before we wrapped up at 3:30 pm, a black police helicopter soared overhead. A minute later, as I tossed my last few pitches, I could see the copter hovering just a few blocks away. Just as we finished practice, an endless parade of emergency vehicles flew down the street a block away. As I got in my car to go home, traveling north on Wornall, I had to pull over four times as at least eight more patrol cars came blazing from the opposite direction.

Turning on my radio I learned that there had been a shooting rampage at the Ward Parkway shopping mall six blocks from where we were playing. The Target store there is the one where we shop. At least three people are dead, and others are injured. I don’t know many specifics, but you might pray for these victims, families, and responders tonight.

The major news channels are following the story. Here is a CNN story.

Freaking out. I was just there buying stuff for the mom and sis when I was just in KC. Praying for all concerned.

  3. It is remarkable that more people were not killed or injured. He killed to in the parking lot but only seriously injured on person in the mall after covering half the length of the mall. At least for that we can be thankful.

  4. There was a surprisingly small write up about this on the third page of our paper in Cedar Rapids IA no less.
I guess these types of things must be seen as more commonplace that they don’t even really register on our radar screen much anymore?

  5. The lack of coverage my have to do with mercifully few casualities involved compared to what could have happened. Also, there just aren’t many details to report at this point beyond what has been reported. Frankly, not covering it too widely is fine by me. No reason to give other disturbed people more ideas.

  6. News this evening says the shooter, who was in his sixties, had a history of mental problems. His sister tried to have him committed in 2005 but was unsuccessful. A neighbor said he was big into UFOs and conspiracy theories.
It also turns out that he rigged his house with explosives. The bomb squad unit has been working at his house most of the day.
