Blogging to Learn

The Eagle and the Child (Russell Smith): Blogging to Learn

About 6 or 7 years ago, I bought William Zinnser's little book Writing to Learn. Zinnser's idea is that the process of writing entails a process of learning — you must collect data, organize that data, and present said data in a clear order. Such interaction with the data cements it in your brain in new and interesting ways. For much of this book he lets us tour his collection of fine writing retrieved from such disparate disciplines as science, philosophy, and math.

This is a fine approach to blogging as well; but modified somewhat The very nature of blogging is relational. Blogging invites commentary from readers, many of them regulars who form a loose cadre of benevolent, though at times sharp-witted, companions.

Russell nails one of my primary reasons for blogging, although I can't say it has improved my grammar or editing ability.

  1. I suppose as with anything else, practice makes better. For me blogging is a way to remind myself how to write, and I have found, after several months of doing it, that I could sit to do professional writing more easily.

  2. I can relate to that. What I find is that trying to put stuff down in writing forces me to drive toward clarity. (Though, I am not sure my readers would notice any clarity. 🙂 ) I also like being able to fish things out I wrote earlier and rework them for other contexts.

    Hey Michael,
i have been ‘blogging’ only for a few months now, but must say it is much more rewarding than simply watching the ‘news’ or even reading a paper! i am learning heaps every day. not just ‘data’ and info but how to (and NOT to) present or argue for an opinion.
you have been a consistant teacher for me on a number of sites – so keep up your blogging!
    many thanks

  4. Thank you for you kind affirmation, Kerryn.

  5. Michael,
Thanks for the kind link. I would suggest that you exemplify the drive to clarity. Your extended reflections on books and particular topics are right on with what I’m talking about with blogging to learn. In fact, I think this’ll be a bit of a series in which I interact with the topic. Keep up the great blogging.
