As you know, Mrs. Kronicle and I are cat people. I have experimented with various cat toys over the years, but none is so well received as the plastic tab you pull to open a milk carton. I toss the tab to Isaac, and he leaps to catch it. Then he tosses it in the air and bats it all across the floor. I know where he loses some of these tabs. I find them when we are cleaning. But I have always been aware that far more are dispersed than recovered.
Recently Mrs. Kronicle has been sanding down and refinishing our 100-year-old banister, spindles, and newell posts. Some repair was needed on the lowest step. Over the decades, it has developed a small gap between the floor and the step. The guys are here working on it this morning. When we took the step off, guess what we found?
I extracted the milk tabs and counted them. Exactly 100.
The case of the missing milk tabs: Solved!
