Over the past few years, author Phyllis Tickle has written a series of "Divine Hours" books dealing with fixed prayer (sometimes called "keeping the hours" or "saying the offices.”) They aid in reviving the discipline of saying prayers at fixed times of the day. Most of her books are nearly 700 pages of material each, which is fine, but a bit cumbersome if you are on the road.
Tickle has just recently published The Divine Hours: Pocket Edition. This compact volume contains one week of fixed prayers organized by periods of the day. At the back are collections of prayers. There is a collection of traditional prayers, there is a collection of seasonal prayers for events throughout the Christian calendar, and there is a collection of occasional prayers for events like birth, death, and marriage.
Travel can take you way out of your routine if you are like me. It is helpful to have guides like these that keep you centered when you are away. I suspect it could come in handy around the office as well. If fixed prayer is something you embrace, this can be a wonderful aid.
