I found this picture at the NEW MEXICAN HISPANIC CULTURE PRESERVATION LEAGUE. According to their research, the Spanish celebrated the first Thanksgiving in what is now the United States in New Mexico in 1598. And based on this painting, I'm guessing that football was there at the start since the priest is indicating a touchdown.
