Kansa City Star: Joy in Jayhawk nation

SAN ANTONIO | Kansas coach Bill Self wasn’t going to become another sad Jayhawk statistic. He called a timeout late in the second half and gathered his team around him.

“This is the last time y’all are going to lace them up together,” Self told them. “How do you want to leave on the court? Do you want to leave champions or do you want to leave losers?”

The Jayhawks had a resounding answer for Self: It would be champions.

Mario Chalmers nailed an improbable three-pointer with 2 seconds left to tie the game at the end of regulation. It was all Kansas after that as the Jayhawks scored the first six points of overtime and defeated Memphis 75-68 in the NCAA championship game. ..

I gotta admit, that was about the best NCAA championship game I've ever seen. And even though I was secretly pulling for the Jayhawks (don't tell Isaac, my tabby, who was pulling for the Tigers), we will now have to live with those insufferable Jayhawk fans. 🙂 My KSU Wildcats stuck 'em with one of their three losses.

  1. …good to have an appropriate place to continue this conversation!
I agree that it was a great game…and the team with the greater heart and grit won. I was telling my son (just finished his first basketball season in 7th grade) that it is the fundamentals that make or break close games. The Tigers learned that lesson the really heartbreaking way…this was their only “close” game, and their free throw clunkers lost them the championship in regulation time.
But it was great to have the last game be so intense!
My condolences to your little tiger, there, dude. Those birds just wore ’em down….

  2. Fundamentals indeed. KU put them to the test. I think there is a lesson in there for other aspects of life.
As for the little striped guy, when Chalmers it the three pointer, he threw is favorite catnip mouse at the screen, leapt off his perch on the back of the couch, and hissed as he sauntered out of the room. (Isaac has some anger management issues.)
He’ll be okay. Nothing a couple of tuna flavored treats can’t cure. 🙂

  3. There certainly is a lesson in there for other areas of life! ;^)
…and, yes, many have issues with anger management — especially associated with sports, eh? :^)
Something tells me a couple of tuna flavored treats won’t fix it for the Memphis folks….

    LOL. I think that’s a safe bet!
