BBC: Say goodbye to the computer mouse

It's nearly 40 years old but one leading research company says the days of the computer mouse are numbered.

A Gartner analyst predicts the demise of the computer mouse in the next three to five years.

Taking over will be so called gestural computer mechanisms like touch screens and facial recognition devices.

"The mouse works fine in the desktop environment but for home entertainment or working on a notebook it's over," declared analyst Steve Prentice.

He told BBC News that his prediction is driven by the efforts of consumer electronics firm which are making products with new interactive interfaces inspired by the world of gaming. …

  1. This story is very silly and designed to do nothing but grab the headlines. Gartner are just a management consultant company, nothing more, they do not make computer hardware. They enjoy routinely shout out daft predictions, which never turn out to be true.

    3-5 years until facial and gesture recognition? Why do we keep giving these shysters our money? I have friends who’ve lost thousands listening to these greedy dreamers – and yes, I mean Gartner and their ilk. There are people who actually make decisions that affect real human lives based upon this kind of drivel.
    Pffft.

  3. But hey. Aren’t these kind of predictions like the kid with a lemonade stand, selling drinks or $1,000 a piece. When an incredulous customer asked him how much money he would make selling lemonade drinks at the price. The kids response was “I only have to sell one.”
