I think there is a real problem when close to 50% of the people do not pay income tax. The government becomes a giant ATM machine to these people, except they aren’t the ones putting in the cash. If you don’t pay taxes, what would motivate you to vote against higher and higher levels of government spending for entitlements? Nothing.

Exactly right, amom. When some pay a tax that others do not, those others have no disincentive to raising that tax. This is not a good trend for a whole lot of reasons, not the least of it being that it encourages class warfare.
