Carpe Diem: Another Market-Based Healthcare Solution
Sounds good for maintenance care for relatively healthy people. But what does it do for those who have major illnesses/disabilities/accidents to deal with? The healthcare problem in this country doesn’t seem to be the cost of primary care, does it?
Right Jim. I think this is targeting a specific but sizable niche.
Lots of folks have insurance for major problems but either no primary care insurance or primary care insurance where the deductibles are way into four digits in order to keep premiums low.
The site claims that over a five year period only 1% of the population visits the emergency room or stays in a hospital. Theoretically, you could go with this club as and then get a major medical policy with a high deductible (maybe supplement this with medical savings accounts.) At any rate, these clubs might increase the number people who are getting preventative care.
In many ways this is throwback the 19th and early 20th century where labor groups, religious groups, and ethnic groups formed mutual aid societies to address health care needs. They were forced out of business by a joint effort of the medical profession and big for-profit insurance companies, who didn’t like the inexpensive competition.
