Aid Watch: "If You Don't Trust People You Know, It's Over!"

NYU Professor Leonard Wantchekon recently made a presentation about the impact of slavery on intra-community trust in Benin. Trust is essential to economic development, and Wantchekon points out that the legacy of slavery in nations such as Benin is mistrust.

Stories like these point to the importance of bottom-up approaches to development. One-size-fits-all grand plans inevitably lack the cultural specificity to tease out and cope with these potential barriers.
