This information should be mapped over population density, not just land area to get a better impression of the spatial correlation. Wilderness areas of few people skew the impression.

I agree. When we do that, that is where we see the real differences.
South America has nearly 400 million people with folks concentrated on the coasts, so we expect infrastructure to be sparse. But Africa has nearly 700 million people and the great majority of them live in the green portion in the bottom half of the continent. There is no infrastructure there. It is incredible.
