I'm doing some research on using social media for a service organization. What organizations would you identify as making effective use of Facebook and Twitter? Why do you think they are good ones?

I think just setting up fan or organization pages and then using them to send out occasional announcements is most effective. If you get too aggressive, it just turns into spam, which is easily ignored or blocked entirely. It’s about establishing a presence more than really pursuing clients. NPR does a good job, for instance. Good links, but not too often that I want to hide the feed.

That has been my general take as well. Occasional info can add to people’s life but too much simply adds to overload. I have NPR in my Google Reader. I’ll take a look at their social media sites.
