People are happiest at 74

Ananova: People are happiest at 74

Seventy-four year-olds are the most contented people in the population, according to a new study.

Fewer responsibilities, financial worries and more time to yourself leads to greater contentment, reports the Daily Telegraph.

According to the report from the teenage years until 40 happiness declines. It levels off until 46 and then starts to increase until peaking at 74.

Scientists from Germany and America regularly questioned 21,000 men and women how happy they were with their lives providing a scale from one to seven – seven indicated complete contentment.

Teenagers in their late teens marked themselves at around 5.5 which fell to around 5 by age 40. At 74 happiness averaged at 5.9. …

Guess this means I've got to wait a quarter century to get really happy.

  1. I think the 7th decade of life is usually fairly stable, at least in the early 70s, but I can tell you that many of those who I know approaching 80 (I’m 78) find their “happiness” declines as old friends and spouses die and health problems start increasing.
Congrats on being gentleman-in-waiting at GAMC. I must confess that my happiness rose once we exited from PC(USA) into EPC.

  2. Thanks Dave.
