A Church by Any Other Name…

Out of Ur: A Church by Any Other Name…

Have you noticed that church names are getting increasingly strange? Our friend Dennis Baker has. He's been keeping a list of church names in order to document how far we've come from the days of "First Presbyterian" and "Springfield Baptist Church." He sent us the following list of 130 church names. I've added my reactions in parentheses.

1. Resonate
2. Revolution (Where only senior pastors get beheaded.)
3. Radiance (Where the female vocalists all glitter like Mariah Carey.)
4. Elevation (U2 songs every bloody Sunday.)
5. Restoration
6. Renovation (You can do it! God can help.)
7. Mosaic
8. enCompass (Wii th-|-nk [outside] the box. We R crAtiVe.)
9. Epiphany Station (Next stop, Conjunction Junction!)
10. Soma (Our pastor knows Greek.)
11. Sanctuary
12. Rock Harbor (If your life hasn’t run aground yet, we can help.)
13. Journey (“Don’t Stop Believing” is our theme song.) …

Of course, my favorite Kansas City church name is Country Club Christian Church. The church is located in the Country Club Plaza neighborhood but is still an interesting name. Do you know any interesting church names?

Speaking of First Presbyterian, I’ve never been in or heard of a town that made it past “Sixth”. Have you? 🙂

  2. I occasionally drive by this one here in Atlanta:
    The Perfect Church

    Bonus points for ambition?

I remember that there is a tenth Presbyterian (PCA) church in Philly. I think it reflects a distinctive lack of creativity. 🙂

    LOL. I love it.

  4. I once saw HALFWAY BAPTIST CHURCH (in HalfWay, MO). But, the strangest one was in the late 70s in Tallulah, LA: FIRST KINGDOM BAPTIST CHURCH AND BARBER SHOP. False front builting with two doors. One had a cross and the other had a barber pole.

  5. I like the church barbershop combo. Nothing like getting a nice cut during worship. 🙂 Sounds like a tent-making effort.
Also, speaking of Missouri, there is a Peculiar United Methodist Church in Peculiar, MO

  6. Here are a few others I’ve encountered:
    The Meeting House
    The Meeting Place
    Potter’s House
    Church On The Rock
    theStory
    Eagle’s Nest Community Church

  7. This may not be funny to everyone, but I chuckle whenever I see a “St. Mary Baptist Church” because it’s on St. Mary Road or somesuch, since Baptists generally don’t use the honorific “Saint”, and certainly not about Mary.

  8. I like it.

  9. I thought Tenth Pres in Philly was Tenth Avenue Pres, right?
Here is one from Illinois–iWorship Center.

  10. Sorry–you were right. It is Tenth Pres. I googled it. Great old church–previously pastored by Donald Gray Barnhouse and James Montgomery Boyce. Wonder what Philip Ryken’s middle name is. I see that he is resigning and they are looking for a new senior pastor. Anybody out there with three names?

  11. I think sometime back the dropped “Avenue” from their name … at least their website just says “Tenth.”

  12. “Arise Church” ; It’s awfully tempting to remove the “i” in their logo…
    Sorry, I couldn’t help it.

  13. Careful Phil. God’s might give you quick kick there for such humor. 😉
