Mike, I have two siblings with muscular dystrophy. Understanding why suffering happens to those we love is difficult, isn’t it?
My short answer is that God causes no ones suffering. God allows us to be exposed to the frailties of human existence, both those over which we have no control and those which we bring on ourselves. We all ultimately suffer the indignity of death. God promises to be with us in our suffering and gives the promise of a final resurrection in which all things are made new.
