This morning I headed out to the pharmacist to pick up some items. As I came to a stop at the light at 33rd and Southwest Trafficway, just three blocks from my home, I found myself witness to the conclusion of a police chase.
Coming south in the southbound lanes was an unmarked Tahoe weaving through the traffic, grill lights flashing. When he got to 33rd Street, he executed an amazing U-turn right in front of me. Just then, I noticed a white SUV coming south in the northbound lanes. The officer's Tahoe and the white SUV collided nearly head-on. The white SUV was knocked into the southbound lanes and stopped about half a block away, two wheels atop the median. After a few seconds, the officer jumped from his Tahoe and ran toward the white SUV. Only then did I notice that other unmarked cars had closed in on the white SUV, and FBI agents were running about. It turns out the man had a woman and a six-year-old boy in the car with him. He was trying to escape a murder warrant (at least, that is what the news said.) I waited around and gave my report to one of the agents.
Speaking of the news, Fox 4 showed up with a crew to report on the story, and I gave them a brief interview. There was a five-second segment where I praised the officer for executing a masterful U-turn to stop the SUV without endangering anyone. Unfortunately, how the story reported it, it sounds like I was praising the escaping vehicle. Oh well.
Here are a couple of photos. This first one shows what was left of the Tahoe the FBI agent was driving.
You can't make it out very well, but the white SUV stopped at the light pole in the center median toward the right in the picture.
All in all, it was an exciting day in the neighborhood.
