Given the number of lines and the turn and the news of the day, I’d guess it’s a howitzer barrel. Admittedly, though, my first guess was the beginning of a James Bond flick.

I served in the Field Artillery … as a mechanic. Nice to know I wasn’t completely useless. 🙂
