Grover Cleveland at Pileus Blog points us to an interesting CNN video by Whole Foods CEO John Mackey about Conscious Capitalism. Mackey describes himself as a libertarian, but unlike Milton Friedman believes that business has to be about more than maximizing shareholder value. Five years ago, Friedman and Mackey debated each other at Reason: Rethinking the Social Responsibility of Business. Here is the recent Mackey video at CNN:

The debate at reason was interesting. The semi-conductor guy seemed to despise the entire Whole Foods “experience.” Doesn’t like their business model nor did he like their customers.
I find WF interesting because they have managed to take something downscale (farming with manure instead of hit tech fertilizer) and making it upscale.
I may be wrong about it’s origins but it’s been my assumption that “modern” organic farming had a very practical beginning. In the late 60’s you had groups of hippies who wanted to live off the land. They couldn’t afford fertilizer from the feed and seed store. But they did have animals that were fertilizer machines. They couldn’t afford fancy store bought feed but they did have land where the critters could graze “free range.” etc. etc. Very practical yet very dirty/messy and dopwnscale.
