This Morning the GAC met in plenary. Our first business action was to elect a GAC moderator and a new GAC vice moderator. Allison Seed (Heartland Presbytery) was elected the new moderator, and Charles Easley (Greater Atlanta Presbytery) was the vice moderator. The rest of the morning and the early afternoon, we heard a helpful presentation about leadership in times of change from Jay Wittmeyer of Lombard Mennonite Peace Center.

This afternoon we broke out into our various divisions. I serve on Mission Support Services. Executive Director John Detterick revealed that he expects a 4-5 million dollar budget reduction in the new budget. This will mean significant staff reductions, but those decisions will not be made until the April GAC meeting. Detterick reported that in the past, cuts were done by divisions. This time the GAC staffing will be looked at as a package in light of the Mission Work Plan ’07-’08 (Assuming its adoption.)

Conrad Rocha gave an update on the Mission Funding Task Force. Nothing is yet being presented for action. There has been considerable conversation with the Reformed Church, and much thought is being given to how we should deal with designated and undesignated giving. Stay tuned.

The MSS Team is on its way to a group dinner this evening. More tomorrow.

Hey Mike … I wondered what you were doing! I wrote an e-mail message to you asking for help in getting a prayer group for GA up and running. Now I know you are in the thick of it! If you have a minute before Saturday will you let me know some general ideas about what’s going on? I know there is a LOT you’re dealing with. And what does your group do?
Just curious … hope you’re feeling better.

  2. Hi Joan Irminger McKenzie! Its been a long time. I will contact you via e-mail shortly but I want to invite everyone to please keep the staff and staff leadership in prayer from now thourgh April. During that time the staff will have to come back with a plan for how to meet the new objectives within the reduced budget. That is going to be particularly hard time for everyone.
