Barack Obama is in my neighborhood today campaigning for the Democrat candidate for the US Senate from Missouri, Claire McCaskill. She used to live about three blocks from where I live until she became the state auditor and moved to Jefferson City. I had the opportunity to speak with her a couple of times when I was out walking or running. She has a lot of respect in KC.
McCaskill is in a dead heat with Jim Talent. Most senate races in Missouri end up being that way. (Politics in Missouri is pretty much the Democrats in St. Louis and Kansas City vs. the Republicans everywhere else in the state.) With a month away, it is time to bring in the heavy hitters, and what better place to do that than in the old neighborhood. The Obama rally is being held at the Uptown Theater, about a 15-20 minute walk from my house. I thought about attending, but the pictures below show the lines, and I decided I had other things to get done today. The picture below shows the line out the door and down two blocks extending beyond the edge of this picture.
Going two blocks back in this picture, I took another shot of the line as it wrapped around the corner and extended back another block or two.
My next-door neighbor, Mrs. Garcia, is the Democrat Committeewoman for our precinct, and she was off this morning to help host a barbecue for McCaskill and Obama after the Uptown event. Mrs. Garcia is very influential in KC politics and has tirelessly advocated for the neighborhoods where I live, especially the Hispanic community. I always enjoy our conversations in the driveway between our houses. McCaskill and Obama would be wise to listen to her a little.
