The British Have Landed! (At least the Beckhams Have)

The ShowBuzz: Beckham Gets Big Welcome In L.A.

(AP) International soccer star David Beckham was officially welcomed to the United States by the Los Angeles Galaxy at a press conference held at California State University on Friday.

The soccer star was presented with a team jersey emblazoned with his name and the number 23 as paper streamers flew threw the air.

"First of all, I'd like to say how honored I am for so many people to come here," Beckham said. "I've always looked for challenges in my career, now my family have now moved to Los Angeles, something we're looking forward to, something we're really proud of."

Still adjusting to his new life in the U.S., Beckham corrected himself when he began to say the word football, the British term for the sport, instead of soccer.

"I'll get used to that at some point, I'm sorry," Beckham said with a laugh.

Beckham went on to say that he was looking forward to training and thanked everybody "who made my dream come true."

Beckham and his wife, Victoria, arrived Thursday night to begin their new lives in the United States. …

So will Becks and Posh be able to do for soccer what John, Paul, George, and Ringo did for Rock 'n Roll?

  2. Soccer has been on the rise for a while. There are now two competing Englishing speaking TV channels for soccer (FSN and GolTV), American youth soccer is doing better and better (U-20 cup for example) and more and more US players are moving abroad and playing with distinction in top leagues.
I think Beckham will help bring more attention here, I think the Beckham rule will help raise the level of play (look at what Angel has been doing for the Red Bulls) and will tolerate it, if the Beckhams become rock stars like the Beatles did … if it means they bring good soccer/music with them.

LOL. I figured you would be the first to get transport to LA tickets for his first game. *grin*
Nate, I’m old enough to remember (I was in diapers of course *grin*) when Pele played for the NY Cosmos. That helped get soccer planted in the US. Sometimes a catalyst is needed to generate a critical mass of interest. I’m not optomistic but I’m hoping.

    Soccer’s a great game.
All the fuss over celebrity athletes is boring to me. But I guess there has been fussing ever since the charioteers and gladiators…
