New Pastor’s Job Description

Our congregation has been without a pastor for a few months. We've been conducting small group listening sessions to determine what the congregation thinks we need regarding a new pastor. I've led two of these groups. This information will be put into a PCUSA Church Information Form as the first step in matching a pastor with our congregation.

After two listening sessions and hearing what is going on in other groups, I've already been able to synthesize the new pastor's job description:

The perfect pastor preaches exactly ten minutes. He condemns sin, but never hurts anybody's feelings. He works from eight in the morning until midnight and is also the church janitor. He is twenty-nine years old and has forty years experience. He makes fifteen house calls a day and is always in the office. (This actually comes from Jan Karon's These High, Green Hills, p. 37)

Any other qualifications you would add?

“Expected to love everyone in the congregation like a brother or sister, but not feel hurt when they decide to go to another church without saying a word.”
At least, that’s what my friend told me you should add. No such baggage here. 🙂

I love your qualifications for a perfect pastor! Jan Karon invites you to visit her website at http://www.mitfordbooks.com. I know you will enjoy the site!

  3. Sounds like Rob Bell talking about SuperPastor: “Superpastor is always available to everyone and accomplishes great things but always has time to stop and talk and never misses anyone’s birthday and if you are sick he’s at the hospital and you can call him at home whenever you need advice and he loves meetings and spends hours studying and praying and yet you can interrupt him if you need something – did I mention he always puts his family first?”

  4. LOL. Bingo!
