My 2012 Olympics Inspired New Logo for the PCUSA

One thing we have discussed at the General Assembly Council for the Presbyterian Church, USA, is our need to communicate our message better. We have even discussed changing our name to reflect our mission better. We have talked about developing a distinctive image.

This week's unveiling of the emblem for the 2012 Olympics inspired me for a new PCUSA logo. Here is the Olympic logo:

Here is the old boring PCUSA logo:

Now here is my proposed new PCUSA logo:

I don't know. What do ya think? The British advertising firm got $800,000 for their logo. I'll settle for half that.

  1. That’s great, Mike! Love it!!
It looks like a torch (maybe representing Hope?) in front of random bits of the old PCUSA logo.

  2. Interesting you picked up on the torch. I didn’t throw these together to intentionally create any recognizable image but looking at it later I saw a torch as well.
Torch of hope? Torch to shine the light on injustice? Torch to burn down the Lousiville offices? That’s the beauty of it! All PCUSAers can identify with something it. 🙂
    (That will be $400,000 please.)

  3. I’ve never been fond of the old logo. As for your design, there is probably something there for everyone, you have beautifully removed the scandal of the cross and ripped the head off the symbol of the Holy Spirit.
One things for certain, I should be a part time logo designer for that British firm, if that is an $800k logo I could produce a couple of those a week and retire in a month!)

  4. I’m afraid I just saw a lot of broken pieces and a flame that was being squeezed in the middle. Maybe if you could just fix the broken pieces the flame would burn brighter, but please not like it was before!

  5. Awesome. What an effective application of deconstructionism.

  6. Hello namesake,
I’m not a member of PCUSA but I’m disturbed by the way you ‘deconstructed’ the logo Derridean style. 😛 It looks like an earthquake hit it beyond recognition. 🙂 Anyways, good job with the Photoshop.

  7. That London Olympics logo bothers me. I keep seeing a broken (but not broken enough) swastika.
Mike, as an abstract composition, yours is better. And as a symbol for our fragmented church . . . whew!

  8. Kathy the broken swastika was the first image that hit my brain when I saw this as well.
I wan’t attempting to represent a fragmented church, just a postmodern one. 🙂 I love the comments here. I think I created it in less than ten minutes with no attempt to create any symbols in it.

  9. I think I see your inspiration for the logo – disorientation – but the Episcopal Church is way ahead of us in that regard. The latest TEC fiasco is the priest who is also a Muslim. She says, “Jesus led me to Islam.

  10. Hey Michael, I think I need this printed up on a T-shrt for me to wear at the next GAC meeting 🙂 Hope you are doing well.

  11. Has a nice Picasoesque feel, don’t ya think? 🙂
Doing well. I hear Matt had a great installation at your home church. Sounds like it was awesome! Hope all is well in MI.
